Classic Asat Z3 Special Order reading code.

I need your help for the G&L code in my Z3 pickup cavity . I'll try to have a pic of that.

Just in case picture doesn't come out here's what is write on the sticker inside the cavity. (2 sticker)

First Sticker:

ASAT Z3 BLONDE EBONY #1

PH - TGN - GNUT - LT - VIBRATO - RC- NB - TB - TORT

SO: # 270079 LN #3

Second sticker:

270079 + 3 + B + SO

I can tell you most of them. It would be helpful to see a photo of the original neck for the others.

The first line should be obvious for the most part. "Ebony" is the original fretboard and "#1" is the neck profile.

As for the second line:

PH = painted headstock
TGN = tinted gloss neck
GNUT = Graph Tech nut
LT = Locking tuners
VIBRATO = Dual Fulcrum Vibrato
RC = ?????
NB = Neck bound
TB = Top bound
TORT = Tortoise shell pick guard
SO = Order number

I'm not sure about the rest, but believe they are for internal processing.

Obviously there is something's wrong because board is maple and there is no locking tuners. I will probably take off the neck to see if I can find something there.

leaving the plastic on destroys the pickguard. try to take it off, but it maybe too late. did you leave it on yourself?

You must have bought this guitar used, right? The neck is not the original neck for an ASAT Z-3. It is for one of the ASAT Classic Series models.
Which also means that the serial number on the back of the headstock is for a different guitar. In the bottom photo I see a G&L gigbag. Was this included
with the purchase of this guitar, possibly along with the factory deluxe tolex case (which would have been an optional case instead of the plastic hardshell case and listed
on the tracking tag as "TOLEX CASE")?

I will try and find out the original serial number and where this guitar was first shipped to using the Sales Order number (SO). Also, let me know the serial number on
the neck (back of the headstock) and I will contact Dave McLaren with this information.

Was this bought from a private seller or from a G&L dealer?

RC = Rear (Body) Contour

As Craig mentions, you don't have the original neck, and as Ken indicated, from decoding your sticker it should have been a #1 neck with 12" radiused ebony fingerboard and painted, matching headstock. These ebony boards are fairly uncommon on G&L ASATs although it is an available option on any guitar for an up charge. The body date in the cavity indicates it is a '08 guitar. Strangely enough, although not the 'advertised' neck, the S/N on yours is commensurate with a neck made in the '08/'09 time frame. So if it was a repair, i.e. the guitar was sent back to the factory for a neck replacement, it must have happened pretty soon after the original purchase date. Otherwise, whoever bilked you out of the original neck must have had another ASAT laying around produced around the same time and swapped the necks before selling you the Z-3.

My Comanche is pretty rare too, it is a sample or something like that. Blackburst with a Z-Z-H configuraton, yes a Humbucker at the Bridge position from the factory.

The 'bucker is not a stock pickup for a Commanche. Any idea where it came from?

But that quilted maple is really nice. Really nice.

Ed, I know. It's kind of strange but maybe it was a try by the factory because that guitar never been molested, the plastic was still on the guard when I bough it. There is also no identification on the back of the pickup. Let me tell you that she is very dynamic and versatile. A real performing instrument.

This is my problem because I don't have any way to contact G&L with the serial number to have more infos on it. That's the main reason I've been on this website to try to have answers to my interrogation. Serial number on my Comanche is: CLF35595

Anybody can help for the year production of my Comanche please. Serial number CLF35595 it's really hard to see on the heal neck.

Comparing it to the S/Ns on my instruments, your Comanche S/N could be around '04-'05. Since they were not used in order, that is about as exact as I can give it. But the stamp in the neck pocket of your Comanche (see included pic below) seems to read '2003' (or maybe '2007') for the year part.

Hi Craig,


I see that sales order number 270079 dated February 4, 2008 for Supakorn Music in Bangkok. The order has that Z-3 on it as described on the tag he has in the photo. Looks like it shipped to them on October 17th, 2008.

I see CLF49905 is showing as an ASAT Classic Clear Orange with a maple fingerboard completed on March 17, 2008 but I don't see it as being shipped. It's possible that something was wrong with the guitar, other than the neck, and we needed a neck to be shipped as a replacement to Bangkok. I can't be certain of what actually happened, though. It's pretty odd that a Z-3 would end up with an ASAT Classic neck on it.

Thank you so much. That explain some bizarre thing. I talk with the guy who I bought the guitar from and he told me that the guy from who he bought them in California was working at G&L plant at that time. That's probably explain lot of thing.

I can't find that number, but it should be 2004 by proximity to other serial
numbers. The link didn't work; looks like it was truncated with the ... in
there. Hopefully he's got a shot under the pickguard.

As of now, I'm going to guess it was modded by a PO along the way.

I followed up with links to some of your photos and here's his latest reply:

Hi Craig,

Sorry I didn’t add anything to that last round we had on the 9th. I can’t say with certainty whether the guitar came with the humbucker from the factory, as I don’t see record of the guitar to begin with. It was apparently built off-line, meaning there’s no order number, nothing to go by. I still think it was built to test the staining of the top in Blackburst, but it’s the pickguard and humbucker I’m less confident in as that can be swapped easily. That said, I think it looks factory, including the humbucker. The pickguard saying “612 custom” appears to be from Chandler, the 612 being for a Legacy HB, and the word “custom” is for the two Z-coils in place of the single-coils.

Bottom line: I think this looks all factory, I just can’t verify it. Thanks, Craig.

The Comanche is really a nice sounding instrument and the neck on it is a "V" contour. I love it. I just order a 3-ply (B-W-B) pickguard with a bridge routed humbucker to put on it in replacement of the tortoise who I tink is not the good one for this superb quilt top.
