Lunch Report for Monday, February 8, 2010 posted by BoogieBill on February 08, 2010 at 09:29:51:

Do you perform live? Tell us of one of your best performance moments.

I haven't played out a lot in the last few years, but I'm gearing up to start up again. Probably one of my best memories is Warsaw Wally's in Phoenix. I've a friend over there with a KILLER BLUES BAND. He's a great guitarist and we've been friends for years despite the fact he insists on playing a Fender instead of a G&L...hahaha.

One night I was there with another buddy watching him on stage and at the end of a song in the middle of the second set he asked me to come help him. He handed me his '68 Tele so he could fiddle around with something and then walked away! I'm on stage with 150 people crammed in drinking beer, playing pool, and looking for music. His band is incredible and they said "do you know such-and-such song?" I replied "Sorry, I don't." They said "No biggie, it's in C, 1 - 2 - 3!" And off we went. They did this 3 songs in a row. On the fourth they said "Do you know Pride & Joy?" I replied "Yes." They said good cause you're singing 1 - 2- 3. I don't know if it was the pressure or what, but I kept up with these guys which amazed the crap out of me. The place was hopping and people clapping, and it was a great evening. The last song I did ~ I turned to the band and said "Do you know such & such?" They said no. Of course, they wouldn't know the song ~ I had just written it about 2 weeks ago...and I said "No problem it's in E, 1 - 2- 3!" So I got them back and after a bow handed the Tele back to my friend. Good times!.

Tell us about some of your bargains, past and present. What is the cheapest guitar in your collection that you actually play?

I just sold it to friend, but I bought an old Fender Del Mar Acoustic from the 60's for $50. I bought it from a friend about 8 years ago. It had 6 holes in the lower bouts where a variety of pickups and things had been "experimented" with over the years. It was a great neck, and a fun guitar. Being banged up, I could take it anywhere! My friend wanted it for a "beach guitar" and I laughed saying if sand got inside he had those 6 holes to pour it out of! He bought it for the same $50 that I got it for, but with the proviso he sells it back to me when he doesn't want it.

Is there a pointy, Floyd Rose or Kahler-equipped shred machine in your past? Spandex and big hair....More importanly, is there a pointy, Floyd Rose or Kahler-equipped shred machine in your future?

First, I believe their is a law in California forbidding fat guys like me to wear spandex! So that will NEVER happen! :) I've never liked any pointy headstock, Kahler or Floyd Rose equipped guitar. I'm thinking it's likely that my personal "Guitar Heroes" never used them. When I look to Hendrix, Vaughan, Clapton, Fogerty, Hellecasters, I just never saw them used.

While I like Eddie Van Halen, I never got into Musicman, Ibanze, or any other guitars like that either. And I do like Metallica, but again ~ my first guitar gods were not using them so it's just not in my DNA.

Regards,

Tim
