Browse those sites and get a general idea of what it's going to take. And do a build because you want to, not as a way of saving vast amounts of cash. Kits I was looking at were not much less than the real deal.

But by all means, go for it. The simpler Fender circuits (like the Champ) are perfect for a 1st. build.
