G&L had been toying with the idea of a Jerry Cantrell Signature
Rampage for a while (Jerry has a number of mid-80s Rampages in his
collection and has used them extensively both for gigging and in the
studio). It even reached the stage where a few prototypes were made
and Jerry was invited to the factory to try them out. But, the
project was scrapped - I'm unsure of the precise details. Regardless,
all of the "R&D" behind a reissue of the Rampage had been done,
and early in 1999, at the Winter '99 NAMM Show, the Custom Creations
Department unveiled the Rampage reissue as its third installment in
the series. It was a 70-guitar run, all finished in white; the
instruments featured the same Kahler tremelo that appeared on the
originals, and they were offered with a gig bag rather than the
standard hardshell case.
