String Tips:
DR Sumbeam on GL L2000 or L2500 is the exact sound of Mike Gordon (from Phish)on Junta album. Yes he uses a Modullus, but he used a G&L L2000 on first albums. This is my favorite strings on G&L L series, because every setting is very distinctive. High output. Big, deep and thick sound and lots of pretty mids, with a decent dose of highs (not too much though) with nice shimering. Nice big umph... no electric shaver ring or edge. Iven if the sound is very thick with humbucker, it reveals the sonnic caracter of the instrument. These strings have a lot of momentum, and they travel much. So it allows medium/low setting.
D'Addario Half Round on G&L L2500 is the sound of Rob Derhak (from moe.). Yes, he use an expensive Ritter, but he also use to play a Karl Thomson. Either way, G&L L2500 sounds just the same with D'Addario Half Round. Sounds similar to flat wound but a bit leaner, and sounds very woody. Low output. Lots of pretty mids, not much highs, and no electric shaver ring or edge. I discovered them because that's what was on my used L2500 when I got it. Like flat wounds strings, they don't travel so much, so it allows very low action setting. Nice.
I hate Stock D'Addario Nickel Round wound strings which come with G&L Basses. Especially when they are fresh. Too much electric shaver ring and edge. It makes every settings sound the same and in fact every basses sound exactly the same with these strings. They sound like my Brown Electric Shaver. They get better with age though.
