Hello from the Finger Lakes

Post by dragonbass »

Hi GbL friends, my name is Al and i'm from the Finger Lakes region of NY near Ithaca and Cayuga Lake.

I've been a Bass player and collector for about 20 years or so and have enjoyed it as a hobby immensely.
I guess i'd have to say i'm more of a collector and tinkerer of basses since my playing wasnt all that great to begin with and has gotten worse since arthritis and carpal tunnel took over my arms and hands.

I found a nice looking 1984 L-2000 bass (the one i have listed in the registry) in my favorite music shop about 15 yrs ago and got it pretty cheap because the neck was jacked up on it. Truss rod isnt busted, but it doesnt work properly. It wont hold tension overnight and the neck is slightly bowed. Also the headstock seems to bow up under tension, kinda like its a little spongy or something. I seem to remember the shop telling me they got it in partial trade and that they were told it had sat in it's case in a closet for years.

Anyways. Time has come for me to set this bass right and try to give it new life. Maybe it will inspire me to play more and give me reason to fight the pain a little harder. I guess i'm here to do alot of reading, maybe make a friend or two and enjoy this hobby again after a few years away. Maybe in the process i can figure out how to do this old bass justice and save it from being parted out.

Hi Sam! Pleased to meet you!
I honestly don't know what i should do with this. On the one hand....i can find and afford an SB-2 Tribute neck to put on it, as those seem to be more commonly available. Finding a proper L-2000 neck? I've been searching fo years and have only seen a couple and they were long sold.
I'd like to bite the bullet and have J&L build me a nice replacement with black block inlays, but it's a little more than i have to spend and would probably put me right at or over what the bass would be worth finished. I'm retired and can't afford to be too extravagant, i just want to get this ol' girl singing again properly and not lose my rear end doing it. Any Advice or thoughts on this are much welcomed.
