here's my 1997 S 500 , not a Deluxe but sounds good and pretty light , probably my lightest strat type guitar

Ok I figured it out how to upload from photobucket, below is my S-500 Deluxe, The only difference I can see from yours and mine is the deluxe doesn't have the pick guard. They have a very solid tremolo arm and bridge on both Guitars.

I have a bunch of Legacys, S-500s and Comnaches and I've played a strat of one kind or another since 1972; but I HATE the way they placed the controls on the Deluxe!!! Why didn't they just put them in the same place as on a Legacy? Ruined the guitar for me...the controls feel so awkward and inconvenient; just different enough to throw me off.
Don't like the control placement on my ASAT Deluxe, either. It has the DFV, and the arm gets in the way. A story for another time.
I must admit...Laurie, your guitar is beautiful. SouthPaw's too!
Yes I Agree Bill, I find a little bit of a problem with the location of the controls, I have a Strat too ( doesnt everybody?) and you get used to where the strat controls are, I guess its just a matter of getting used to the deluxe as well. I'm using the deluxe more and more now, I have a Paul reed smith Standard 24 that I use too, but Im starting to turn towards the s-500 deluxe now. I play solo gigs, do a bit of Shadows and I find the deluxe has all the nice strats sounds as well as PRS sounds too. I also play lead in a band and I find the deluxe good for that too.
Regards Laurie

Bill
lets take a look at a regular S-500 controls vs. Deluxe.
btw, the 30th is an excellent guitar.
Now take a look at the Deluxe placement
I too wish the control knob was moved father away from the strumming hand.

Pickguards have their advantages.
Here is the deluxe being painted with Nickel to reduce humm.
Deluxe being painted Nickel in PU cavity
Pickguards, if set up properly, will have better protection against hummmmm.
There is a noticeable difference. I have an S-500 with metal pickguard to compare to.
Why I prefer the deluxe? Because it has 1 3/4 " nut width.
laurie, if you don't have the 1 3/4 nut, THEN you did it wrong! I suggest you fix it by ordering a new Deluxe with a 1 3/4".
