My new Legacy was previously added to the Registry

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

My new Legacy was previously added to the Registry

Post by fjabjr »

Not sure if this is the proper forum to post this.... So, I just purchased a very nice Legacy from a local pawn shop. Went to add it to the registry here and see that is already registered. There is an email address associated to the previous owner but no name. I suppose I could contact him to see if indeed he is no longer the owner and that it was hopefully not stolen from him and just pawned for money.

I sure hope it wasn't stolen cause then my conscience won't let me keep the guitar. It's a real nice one too. If it turns out it was stolen, would the pawn shop be liable for returning the cash to me?

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Frank

it's probably nothing , some people just don't keep up with it , enter your email as the owner in the registry , Craig will probably email you first and then it will get logged

The Registry says that the previous owner will be contacted to confirm the change. Nobody has updated the Register for any of the ones I've sold off, so I can't say for sure if it works.

I contacted the person who registered one of my G&Ls, for the same reason you brought up. He emailed right back to let me know he had sold the guitar several years before, but it must have changed hands several times before it ended up with me.

Here's what the Registry F.A.Q. has regarding this:
4. My Instrument appears to have already been registered! What do I do?
Do not be alarmed if your Instrument already appears in The G&L® Registry; it may have been submitted by a previous owner, by a dealer who had it for sale, or by someone else who was able to determine its serial number (perhaps from a "for sale" ad on the Internet, or in person at a music store). If you would like to edit the listing and/or declare yourself as the Instrument's "owner", click on the Instrument's serial number, and you'll be taken to the "Edit an Existing Instrument" screen. Simply follow the instructions given there.
And, yes an email is sent to the previous registered owner and the Registry Admin (me) when a new owner updates the existing registry entry and there is still a current owner listed.
It is rare but on occasion I hear back from the previously listed owner indicating that they still own the instrument. I then contact the new owner and ask for verification of the serial number
via a photo. In all cases, so far, it turns out that the new owner entered the wrong serial number and then edited that registry entry. I then restore the ownership back to the rightful owner.
So, yes the notification process works.

Here the Registry F.A.Q. link, in case you want to see the other questions and replies.

Hope this helps.
